i have the E6420 it have an Core i5 2420M…. the question is… can i upgrade the CPU to an i7? it is worth it?

I have one and I got it running games like beamng drive at 30 fps, minecraft at 100+ fps, mudrunner at 20-30 fps, dirt 4 at 20 fps, just cause 2 at 40-50 fps, my summer car 30 fps, assetto corsa at 30 fps. And it is factory with the intel I7. And in my opinion thats pretty good for what it is.
I wonder if I can install a E6430 motherboard into the chasse..

As I said on your previous – this is 1600×900 typically. Mine is from 2011 as well. The latch broke but dedicated graphics (not good) and I'm making this comment whilst running many tabs on chrome with 1080p and browsing FB no issues. i5 2520m

Got the i5 with integrated video.
Got an SSD in there, a second HDD in the DVD caddy.
Also got a second battery (the original wasn't great) and a backlit keyboard. Running Linux – works great.

Yeah i have one and it can run most of the game in 2011– with low setting, even mw3 can run smoothly with highest grapghic with Aa off

e6420 can take up to Intel Core i7-2860QM (4 cores/8 threads).
mine is working fine ssd 5g card new LG panel still 720, issues with audio driver on w10
mine does good winsows 10 lastest build had to use some drivers for windows 8

I have the XFR (rugged) version of that unit and it performs just fine with an i7-2840QM. In fact the XFR is even worse thermally given that it's hermetically sealed but nonetheless no issues. Mine has 16G RAM, SSD, and still runs like a champ.
I have weird high cpu rates randomly any advice?

I got this laptop at a thrift store for $30. It got me through my last two years of school. It still works. I use it as my lightweight laptop. I like it with an SSD. Mine has 4GB of Ram. Only issue i have is openGL support on the intel graphics 3000.

I've got the E6430 its literally in perfect shape. I just updated it with a 500gb ssd and this thing is snappy. The handle and the ruggedness of this laptop makes it perfect for automotive shop use. Thanks for the great vid.
I just rescued one of these from an e-waste bin. Even came with an external extra battery. I'm going to try and upgrade it to use as my second laptop.

I just ordered one, based on my experience with my E6410. However, I I am able to play a number of light games on this system now, and I expect to do the same or a little better with the E6420. My main concern right now is the bus speed. Hope its a little better

I got an E6420 brand new in 2011 which I used 50+ hours a week for work until 2017, and now use casually as my personal laptop. It does really well and is totally usable in 2020!
Originally equipped with the Core i5-2520M 2.5Ghz, 4GB of DDR3 1600 RAM, some slow hard-drive (I forget), and the nVidia NVS 4200. It also had a DVD-R/W.
Somewhere around 2013 I put Linux Mint on it and have used Mint as my main OS since then. The overhead for Linux is a lot less than Windows.
Somewhere around 2016 I put a hybrid SS-HD drive in (500GB and 8GB flash) and 4GB additional of DDR31600 (total of 8GB). This really sped things up.
Eventually though I needed more memory for work and upgraded to 16GB of DDR 1866 and a 1TB Crucial SSD. This really allowed this machine to fly. If no one told you that you were using a laptop from 2011 you may now know it!
I have the "deluxe" port replicator/docking station and have them hooked up to a 43" 4K display, so the low resolution of the onboard screen is not an issue.
I have seen these laptop son eBay for $50!!!
Eventually I would like a quad core CPU upgrade! Has anyone done this?
Also I have been looking for a travel battery which goes in the optical bay but can't find one. I know Dell used to offer these in their 2000s laptops.
