This video covers the process of upgrading the OEM solid-state drive (SSD) to a larger solid-state drive from Crucial Memory. Dell actually shipped this Latitude E7440 Ultrabook with an MSATA card loaded into a hard drive cage. The instructions I provide in this DIY hard drive upgrade video will be very similar if you are replacing a hard disk drive (HDD) with a solid-state drive. This video also covers how to remove the backplate cover on a Dell Latitude E7440 laptop computer. It is necessary to remove the backplate when upgrading the memory as well as the hard drive. or solid-state drive. Windows 10 Dell Ultrabook.

Mark … Thanks for the lesson … it is very helpfull …
Anybody else have complaints about the battery? Mine won't hold a charge more than 30 minutes. Thinking of making a DIY vid on upgrading the RAM and replace the battery. Stay tuned…
Thank you bro
Hey! Could you tell me how can I install another battery in this laptop?
If i'm putting in a mechanical hard drive i want to use as a back up on this unit, can i make the ssd that comes with the computer my primary drive when i swap it over? I'm not so sharp on these things
I got the same drive, mx500 I think, but my e7440 doesn't seem to sit flat anymore. I think the drive is too large.
so helpful thank you, didn't know it supports two drives
Hi, so you can use the mSATA like a hard disk even if it is specified as mSATA WWAN card (written like that in the empty mSATA slot location)? Or is it that the mSATA will be used for some specific purpose other than storage?
Thanks Mark for this video!
One thing is still missing for me, just in the end:
Does the BIOS setup supports changing the boot sequence to the mSata SDD drive?
So I can have two mSATA SSD drives on this laptop? … like… leave the default one the way it is and install the new one where you moved your default SSD drive?
For anyone watching: Check your laptop first. In my situation, the small drive was already in the slot and the big drive space was empty. I had to buy the bracket and the hard drive cable. On amazon for 10 dollars. On ebay through 2 transactions for 15 total. If you use amazon, search: "e7440 hard drive cable" buy the one with the bracket for $10 with 2 day shipping.
Hey mate, well done, great video! I'm wondering if it is possible to upgrade the video drive as well?
Thanks.
Considering this video is two years old, Is there a newer model that has this same setup? So I can run an m-SATA SSD and a mechanical 1TB HDD.
Hi …. The ssd is 5 or 7mm
thanks for the demonstration, this dell seem to support hdd + m.2 ssd ?

in the 2nd hand e7440 I bought, the primary drive was msata but it was already installed in the msata card slot. In order to add a 1tb hdd into the hdd bay I had to not only get the bracket but also a connector, as it was not installed on my laptop. Heres a link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/112157979834?lpid=122&chn=ps&adgroupid=13585920426&rlsatarget=aud-133395220626%3Apla-75952154106&adtype=pla&poi=&googleloc=9046363&device=c&campaignid=207297426&crdt=0
I did it exactly like you showed in this video but the Windows 10 installer didn't recognize the ssd and it keeps me asking for a valid controller
Hi there! Can you please confirm me if the empty msata port which you installed the pre-installed msata ssd, is sata2 or sata 3? Because i'm in a hurry to upgrade
Great Video, very clear!!!
Thanks for the clearly explained video and well lit/shot as well.
What kind of bracket/frame did you use? You mentioned checking eBay, but what should I search for exactly?
Great video, thanks! I got a h/d sent from a coworker and was looking inside my 7440 trying to figure out how to mount.
Awesome Video, Mark!
Please kindly state the exact spec and the brand for the primary Msata ssd slot 1 and for the WWAN port slot 2. I am in a dye hard need to upgrade my ssd drive on Dell E7450. Please assist with the exact spec which fits perfectly into the slots.
Thanks a lot
is the M.sata wired straight to PCI express or does it go to Sata? if so there should be no difference in a sata SSD and a M.sata SSD right?
Can you remove the msata (along with the bracket) and use it on another dell laptop but as the master drive? Trying this now. I have the same E7440 like you have and I removed the msata 256gb along with the bracket. Want to put it into an Inspiron 17000 series to replace the regulat hdd. But it does not get detected. Why?
Hi Mark, great video ! clear, to the point, very well explained, ….simply great ! congrats and best !
Is there a link to buy the bracket you used on the SSD ?
hi Mark Jenkins, I have a Dell Latitude E7440, I got it with the mSata card in it, i have ordered a 500GB HDD from Dell, My question is – Will I be still be able to reuse the mSATA card (256gb) that came with it, by inserting it into the mSATA slot? And drop the 500Gb HDD into the HardDrive slot and get the benefit of (500+256 GB) memory??
Hi there, Mark I have the same E7440 Dell as you and I'm thinking to upgrade it ! buying a new Crucial like you did but also keep the previous one inside ..so I've got some questions :)… the e7440 came with WIN7 and following the instructions i made the updates to WIN8 then to WIN8.1 and finally to WIN10 (how I'm I suppose to make a WIN10 clean install without having a windows key?….. second question.. I have noticed that this factory SSD is too slow (have you noticed that too?) did you see a big difference in terms of performance using the new crucial? (some times I think that my e7440 is so slow because of the processor or the bios version ( I have read that a lot e7440 owners are having the same issues) …any thoughts on that?? thanks for your time 🙂
Great vid Mark!! Thanks!
